Rebuilding Amar Jyoti Janata High School

The Amar Jyoti Janata High School in Luintel, Gorkha built by the United Mission to Nepal first opened in 1963. Since then it has served as one of the leading schools in the Nepal hills. It was irreparably damaged in the 2015 earthquake, and the government’s commitment to rebuild it failed to materialize. Meanwhile 450 plus students have spent the last four years studying under tarps and tents, rain or shine. It was time to rebuild the school: safer and all-round better.

Gorkha Foundation worked with an experienced engineering firm with specifications cleared by the Nepal Government, recently applied to other schools built by JICA (Japanese Internal Cooperation Agency) in Nepal. We contracted with a construction firm with solid experience in school building and applied the same management supervision and oversight used in the previous school construction projects, with full time project managers onsite from start to finish.
